Acanthocytes (G1 cells) are dysmorphic erythrocytes with cytoplasmic protrusions, a marker of glomerular hematuria. Unlike other dysmorphic erythrocytes, they do not form due to changes in the physicochemical parameters of urine in vitro. Phase-contrast microscopy is preferred for their detection.
