Babesia in dog blood. Microscopic examination of Romanowsky-Giemsa stained dog blood smears revealed intraerythrocytic pear-shaped parasites characteristic of Babesia or Piroplasma, which cause the disease piroplasmosis. In dogs, the pathogen enters the body through the bite of an infected tick.
