Differential Diagnosis of Blasts and Lymphocytes in Blood

Morphological features of blasts in blood: high nuclear-cytoplasmic ratio, delicate chromatin, and the role of immunophenotyping in diagnosis.

The photograph shows blasts in peripheral blood. As we can see, they are very similar to lymphocytes, but the delicate reticular chromatin, high nuclear-cytoplasmic ratio, and strange shapes of some nuclei suggest blast cells, presumably of lymphoid origin. For definitive differentiation, immunophenotypic examination is necessary.
