Elastic Fibers in Skin Scrapes: Distinguishing from Fungal Mycelia

Learn to differentiate elastic fibers from fungal mycelia in skin scrapes under microscopy with 20% KOH: morphology, branching, and optical properties.

Native preparation of a skin scrape with 20% KOH: elastic fibers, mag. x400

Elastic fibers. Skin scrape. Magnification x400. KOH 20%, exposure 30 minutes. An inexperienced microscopist might confuse them with fungal mycelia. Elastic fibers are thinner, rarely branch, and lack the greenish sheen characteristic of mycelia when rotating the fine adjustment knob.
