Microscopy of native pleural fluid smear: detection of anisocytosis, poikilocytosis, echinocytes, and schistocytes in an anemic patient.
In a native pleural fluid smear from a patient (with anemia in the complete blood count), single leukocytes and a large number of erythrocytes are visible. The surprising fact was that anisocytosis and poikilocytosis of erythrocytes could be observed in the native smear. Single schistocytes and echinocytes were also present.
