Giant platelets (macrothrombocytes) are large-sized platelets that can be a sign of various diseases. Some causes of giant platelets include:
- Hereditary diseases. For example, Bernard-Soulier disease (macrothrombocytopenia). In this disease, a glycoprotein is absent in the platelet membrane, leading to impaired cell adhesion.
- Pathological processes in the bone marrow. For example, essential thrombocythemia — a disorder in which the bone marrow produces too many platelets, including giant forms.
