🔬 Neutrophil hypersegmentation.
Hypersegmentation is defined as the presence of any number of neutrophils with more than 5 nuclear segments or more than 3% of neutrophils having 5 segments (when examining 100 neutrophils). Hereditary and acquired forms of neutrophil hypersegmentation are distinguished.
Hereditary forms are inherited in an autosomal dominant manner; neutrophil function is not impaired in these cases.
Acquired forms are observed during treatment with cytostatics and prednisolone; they are also characteristic of patients with megaloblastic anemia.
