Hypochromia of Erythrocytes in Blood Smear: Causes and Morphology

Morphological signs of erythrocyte hypochromia in a blood smear. Causes of decreased hemoglobin saturation: IDA, thalassemia, and lead poisoning.

Hypochromic erythrocytes are erythrocytes with a pale pink color and a sharply pronounced (to a greater or lesser extent) central pallor. Hypochromia is due to low hemoglobin saturation of the erythrocyte, often combined with microcytosis. Hypochromia is characteristic of iron deficiency anemias, and also occurs in lead poisoning, thalassemia, and other hereditary anemias. In rare cases, a condition is observed in which the erythrocyte and hemoglobin levels are reduced, but the color index remains normal. Such a picture indicates normochromic anemia.
