Neutrophil Hyposegmentation: Morphology & Differential Dx

Neutrophil hyposegmentation in a smear: differential diagnosis of Pelger-Huët anomaly and pseudo-Pelger-Huët cells in myelodysplastic syndrome.

🧐 NEUTROPHIL hyposegmentation

Chromatin is mature, one could even say overmature. In this case, the nuclei are more often round or bean-shaped, which can be mistakenly interpreted as a myelocyte/metamyelocyte. ☝🏻BUT in fact, it is a mature cell.

📌Neutrophil hyposegmentation can be hereditary (Pelger-Huët anomaly) and acquired (MDS; infectious diseases; certain medications).

*The photo shows a bone marrow smear. Peripheral blood shows the same neutrophil morphology.
