Cutaneous Cryptococcosis: Differential Diagnosis with Leishmaniasis

Cryptococcus neoformans or leishmaniasis? A clinical case from a subscriber from Israel 🇮🇱.

✅ A 74-year-old patient was referred to the laboratory for wound material collection to rule out cutaneous leishmaniasis. The wounds were deep, black, rounded lesions, d=approx. 0.5 cm. ✅ Leishmania were not detected either microscopically or by PCR. Spore-like formations were found extracellularly and intracellularly in the smear. ✅ The following differential diagnoses were considered: Histoplasmosis, Sporotrichosis, Cryptococcosis, etc.

❗Cryptococcus neoformans was found in the microbiology laboratory.

🔬The case was kindly shared by the Head of the Morphology/IFT Department of the HaEmek Medical Center Laboratory, Afula 🇮🇱Israel - Anna Belen.
