Böttcher's Crystals in Prostatic Secretion: A Case Study

Microscopy of prostatic secretion reveals Böttcher's crystals (spermine phosphate) in a 65-year-old man with chronic prostatitis. Learn more about their formation.

Prostatic secretion. Male, 65 years old. Böttcher’s crystals are small, colorless or slightly yellowish crystalline structures. They are formed from spermine and phosphate salt. With age, involutional processes occur, which can affect the composition of the secretion. There is a tendency for calcium concentration to increase, which contributes to crystal formation. Associated with chronic prostatitis.
