Cholesterol Crystals in Urine: Microscopy and Causes of Lipuria

Morphology of cholesterol crystals during urine sediment microscopy. Clinical significance of lipuria in nephrotic syndrome and lipoid nephrosis.

🔬 Urine Sediment Microscopy. Cholesterol Crystals. Cholesterol (anisotropic fat) can be excreted in urine. This phenomenon is called lipuria. This symptom is most characteristic of lipoid nephrosis and severe forms of nephrotic syndrome of various etiologies. Cholesterol crystallizes as very thin rhombic plates, arranged side by side and overlapping each other, forming steps. Often, along with them, fat droplets, renal epithelial cells in a state of fatty degeneration, and hyaline casts with fatty deposits can be found.
