Uric Acid Crystals in Urine Analysis: Microscopy

Morphological features of uric acid crystals in urine sediment: macroscopic appearance, polymorphism of forms, and microscopic picture.

Uric acid crystals in acidic urine. Visually, uric acid sediment has a reddish tint, unlike the pink of its salts, urates; under the light of a microscope lamp, sediment with a large number of such crystals may have a slight sheen. Uric acid crystals are characterized by pronounced polymorphism; in this case, their form is predominantly represented by leaf-like scales, which are capable of strongly adhering to each other, forming bizarre conglomerates that change their pattern when the fine adjustment knob is rotated.
