Charcot-Leyden Crystals in Sputum: Microscopic Examination

Morphology of Charcot-Leyden crystals in native sputum. Causes of formation from eosinophil breakdown, diagnosis in asthma and helminthiasis.

🔬 Native sputum smear, 100x magnification; 40x; + phone camera magnification. Charcot-Leyden crystals. They appear as shiny, smooth, colorless rhomboids of various sizes, sometimes with blunt ends. Their formation is associated with the breakdown of eosinophils. The presence of these crystals in sputum is characteristic of bronchial asthma, eosinophilic bronchitis, helminthic lung lesions, and less commonly, croupous pneumonia and various forms of bronchitis.
