Laboratory Diagnosis of Amoebiasis: Stool Microscopy

A clinical case of intestinal amoebiasis in a child: detection of Entamoeba histolytica trophozoites in a native stool smear and a Romanowsky-stained smear.

🐍 A parasitology case from our subscriber.

A child, 8 years old, was admitted to the hospital with complaints of high fever (39.0 °C), liquid stool with blood admixture, and no improvement after treatment for enterocolitis prescribed by a pediatrician, which included antibiotic therapy. Laboratory stool examination revealed a significant number of leukocytes, erythrocytes, and mucus. To clarify the diagnosis, a microscopic examination of a native stool smear (images 5-7) and a Romanowsky-stained smear (images 1-4) was performed.
