Burkitt Lymphoma: Cytological Features and Immunophenotype

A clinical case of Burkitt lymphoma in an adolescent: cytology of tumor biopsy, starry sky pattern, macrophages, mitoses, and immunophenotyping.

Burkitt Lymphoma. Patient, 12 years old, with normal CBC, LDH 1300 U/l (N=230-480). Abdominal lymphadenopathy, intestinal obstruction. Biopsy material from the tumor mass was sent for immunophenotyping and histology. In the cytological smear, the “starry sky” pattern is not as distinct as it is in histological sections, but nevertheless: macrophages with engulfed apoptotic bodies against a background of lymphoid cells. Lymphocytes with pronounced vacuolization and basophilia of the cytoplasm with a phenotype positive for CD19, CD20, CD10, CD79a, kappa, negative for CD34, CD3, CD5. IHC positive for C-myc, negative for BCL2, BCL6. Ki-67 = 100%
