Myelodysplastic Syndrome: Bone Marrow Morphology

Clinical case of suspected MDS: dyserythropoiesis, 10% blasts in bone marrow, cytopenia, and normoblasts in peripheral blood.

Patient, 86 years old, admitted for examination to the hematology department. In CBC: leukocytosis, thrombocytopenia, anemia, anisocytosis, poikilocytosis, normoblasts. In bone marrow biopsy: 10% blasts, proliferation of erythroid lineage cells with signs of dyserythropoiesis – megaloblastoid changes, multinuclearity, cytoplasmic vacuolization; mononuclear megakaryocytes are present. MDS can be suspected. Cytogenetic testing is recommended.
