Myelogram in Suspected Myelodysplastic Syndrome

Bone marrow smear analysis for trilineage cytopenia and suspected MDS: cell morphology, blast count, and differential diagnosis criteria.

Sternal puncture of a patient with peripheral blood trilineage cytopenia 🩸, being investigated for suspected MDS. Bone marrow is cellular, blast cells 2.5%, plasma cells 1.5%, erythropoiesis predominantly normoblastic, occasional megaloblasts, megakaryocytes mostly with poor platelet budding. It is recommended to exclude other diseases accompanied by hematopoietic dysplasia (cancer, tuberculosis, autoimmune processes, heavy metal exposure, etc.) as part of the diagnostic workup.
