Multiple Myeloma: Atypical Plasma Cells in Bone Marrow

A clinical case of multiple myeloma: renal failure, skull osteolysis, and over 50% atypical plasma cells in a bone marrow smear.

A patient from the nephrology department was admitted for dialysis with a diagnosis of right kidney neoplasm, multiple bone metastases with no identified primary source. Acute kidney injury on a background of chronic kidney disease. Skull X-rays revealed multiple areas of destruction in the frontal, temporal, and parietal bones. The myelogram showed up to 50% plasma cells!
