Elliptocyte Morphology in Peripheral Blood Smears

How to distinguish true elliptocytes in a blood smear from preparation artifacts: cell orientation features and microscopic evaluation criteria.

Peripheral blood smear: elliptocytes oriented in different directions
Peripheral blood smear: elliptocytes oriented in different directions

Numerous elliptocytes (some indicated by arrows), oriented in different directions. Such an arrangement allows ruling out the possibility of an artifact arising during blood smear preparation.

Sample type Peripheral blood

Staining type May-Grünwald-Giemsa
