Promyelocyte Morphology: Identification in Blood Smear

Learn about promyelocyte morphology in blood smears: cell size, nuclear structure, primary azurophilic granulation, and perinuclear zone.

🔬 Promyelocytes

Promyelocytes are round or oval cells, 12-25 µm in diameter, larger than myeloblasts. They have a large and slightly indented nucleus, which is usually eccentric, with a visible nucleolus, and the chromatin begins to aggregate and becomes coarser and clumpier than in myeloblasts. They have abundant basophilic cytoplasm, stained blue or dark blue, and contain purple-red or dark purple-red non-specific granules in varying quantities and with different morphologies, unevenly distributed throughout the cytoplasm. A distinct perinuclear zone is present around the nucleus.
