Assessing Hemoglobin and Hematocrit in Blood Loss

Why hemoglobin and hematocrit levels don't always reflect acute blood loss severity: clinical parameter assessment and risks of unjustified blood transfusion.

Hematocrit and Hemoglobin A decrease in hematocrit and hemoglobin levels does not always reflect the degree of blood loss. An objective analysis of hematocrit and hemoglobin levels should only be performed in conjunction with data on blood pressure, pulse rate, respiratory rate, urination, and shock index. Recommendations for red blood cell transfusion based solely on hematocrit and hemoglobin data are unjustified and unsafe for the patient.
