ERROR BY A LABORATORY EMPLOYEE.
In 2018, a case against a laboratory physician from the clinical diagnostic laboratory of Hospital No. 2 in Miass was sent to court. The medical professional made an error in a blood sample analysis, which led to the patient’s death. According to the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation for the Chelyabinsk region, the patient was being prepared for surgery that required a blood transfusion. The laboratory technician performed the analysis but confused the Rh factor and failed to identify the presence of antibodies. As a result, surgeons repeatedly transfused the patient with blood that was not suitable for her vital signs. A month and a half later, she died from acute renal failure. A criminal case was initiated under Article 118 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, “Causing grievous bodily harm due to improper performance of professional duties.”
