Gram Stain Errors: Dye Crystallization on Hot Glass

Learn about the causes of dye crystal formation during Gram staining. This article covers errors in smear fixation technique and gentian violet crystallization on hot glass.

Flowers for March 8th. An error in Gram smear staining. The slide was fixed over a burner flame, and gentian violet was immediately poured onto the hot glass. As a result, we see altered dye structures resembling flowers or snowflakes in the preparation. (The students tried hard and gave us flowers on a slide 😆)
