A clinical case of acute lymphoid leukemia in a dog: hyperleukocytosis 132.6 K/µL, pancytopenia, blastemia, and frequent mitotic figures in a blood smear.

🔬🩸🐕Blood of a 7-year-old female mixed-breed dog. Referred for investigation of anemia and possible piroplasmosis; symptoms unknown. ✅Leukocytosis 132.6 K/µL. Severe anemia (Hct 17%) with no regeneration (polychromatophils 11.5 K/µL). Profound thrombocytopenia: 15 K/µL. ✅Preliminary diagnosis based on blood smear morphology: acute lymphoid leukemia (ALL). Note the large number of mitoses. ✅Leukemic transformation of large cell lymphoma should, lege artis, be included in the differential diagnosis, but it is less likely here. ✅No piroplasmosis pathogens were found within the blood preparations. 👉This clinical case was kindly provided by - Olga Belozerova, clinical pathologist, head of the laboratory at the veterinary clinic “Noah’s Ark”, Kirov.
