Acute Myeloid Leukemia: Blasts and Myeloperoxidase Reaction

A clinical case of acute myeloid leukemia: hypocellular bone marrow, blast cell morphology, positive myeloperoxidase reaction, and immunophenotyping.

Clinical case. Bone marrow aspirate shows blasts (19%). Complete blood count shows anemia and thrombocytopenia. Bone marrow photographs (1,2): hypocellular bone marrow. Blasts are medium to large, with oval and irregularly shaped nuclei, containing 2 or more, up to 6, nucleoli. Cytoplasm is basophilic, with azurophilic granulation in some cells. Positive MPO (3,4,5). Diagnosis of AML. Confirmed by immunophenotyping.
