Ovoid Calcium Oxalate Crystals in Urine Sediment

How to differentiate ovoid calcium oxalate crystals from red blood cells during urine sediment microscopy: optical properties, fine focus, and common errors.

⚠ Please, do not confuse them with red blood cells! 👉 Ovoid calcium oxalate crystals. Urine sediment microscopy.

✅ “Envelope” shaped crystals are a well-known and frequently encountered variety of calcium oxalate salts. However, the oval forms of these crystals can cause interpretation difficulties and be mistakenly identified as red blood cells.

❗To avoid confusion, it is sufficient to carefully adjust the microscope’s fine focus knob: the characteristic opalescence and light refractions, typical of these crystals, will help distinguish them from red blood cells, for which such optical effects are not characteristic!
