Transitional Epithelium in Urine. Transitional epithelium (urothelium) lines the urinary tract, and its appearance in sediment (normally, isolated cells) signals inflammation. Morphologically, these cells are larger than squamous cells, have diverse, polymorphic shapes (round, pear-shaped, “tailed”), and contain large nuclei. Elevated levels indicate cystitis, urolithiasis, or prostatitis.
