Plasmacytoid Lymphocytes: Morphology and Scattergram

Explore the morphological features of plasmacytoid lymphocytes in blood smears and their characteristic appearance on hematology analyzer scattergrams.

A collection of plasmacytoid lymphocytes and their characteristic scattergram (tail upwards)☝

🔵Plasmacytoid lymphocytes are reactive lymphocytes with coarse chromatin and blue cytoplasm; perinuclear clearing can also be observed.

Visually, they may resemble plasma cells, but they are not🙅🏼‍♀

✅Normally, reactive lymphocytes can be up to 5%

Large numbers of reactive cells appear when the lymphoid system is activated (viral/bacterial infections, autoimmune processes).
