Curschmann Spirals in Sputum Analysis: Diagnostic Value

Curschmann spirals in native sputum microscopy: formation mechanism, microphotographs, and clinical significance in bronchial asthma.

🔬 Curschmann Spirals. Native sputum preparation. 40x magnification.

Curschmann spirals form during spastic conditions of the bronchi and the presence of mucus within them. During a cough, viscous mucus is expelled into the lumen of a larger bronchus, coiling into a spiral. Curschmann spirals appear in bronchial asthma, bronchitis, and lung tumors that compress the bronchi.
