🔬 Toxic granulation of neutrophils is the appearance of large basophilic granules in the cytoplasm of neutrophils. It results from impaired granule maturation in the bone marrow, which is associated with protein denaturation under the influence of an infectious or toxic agent. The appearance of neutrophils with toxic granulation indicates the severity of the inflammatory process. This phenomenon is observed in sepsis, peritonitis, massive purulent-destructive processes, severe infections (e.g., pneumonia or endocarditis), burns, extensive trauma, and in some cases after chemotherapy.
Clinical significance: the degree of toxic granulation can correlate with the severity of the inflammatory process, making it an important indicator in the diagnosis and monitoring of infectious and inflammatory diseases.
