Plasmodium falciparum Tropical Malaria in Blood Smear

Morphological diagnosis of Plasmodium falciparum tropical malaria: ring-form trophozoites, schizonts, and gametocytes in a peripheral blood smear.

Tropical malaria. Causative agent - Plasmodium falciparum Tropical malaria is the most severe form of the disease, as this species of protozoa has very high reproduction rates. In the peripheral blood at the beginning of the disease, in uncomplicated cases of tropical malaria, only the youngest stages – ring-form trophozoites – are found. In the height of the infection, gametocytes also appear in the blood, forming on days 10-12. In complicated cases, all transitional stages of the parasite may be found in the peripheral blood.
