Severe Dyskaryosis in Cervical Cytology with HPV

Morphological features of cervical cells with HPV: signs of severe dyskaryosis, hyperchromatic nuclei with folded contours, and scanty cytoplasm.

Cervical cytological smear: cells with signs of severe dyskaryosis
Cervical cytological smear: cells with signs of severe dyskaryosis

Cervical cytology in HPV. The smear shows small, isolated cells with signs of severe dyskaryosis. The cell nuclei are dense, hyperchromatic, with pronounced folding of the contour (“raisin-like”), occupying most of the cell volume. The cytoplasm is scanty and poorly discernible. These cells may be inconspicuous against the background of normal elements, therefore, a thorough examination of the background and the spaces between large squamous cells is required for their detection.
