🔬 Neutrophil Vacuolization. Vacuolization occurs more frequently in the cytoplasm, sometimes in the nucleus. Its presence in the nucleus indicates profound changes in the cell and the severity of the pathological process. Vacuolization often combines with other structural changes in the cell. Cytoplasmic vacuoles are observed in severe infections, sepsis, and acute liver dystrophy. This sign is among the earliest pathological changes in leukocytes. Vacuolization can also be an artifact – it appears in neutrophils during prolonged blood storage due to the effect of EDTA on them.
