Congenital Dyserythropoietic Anemia in Blood Smear

A clinical case of congenital dyserythropoietic anemia in a child: erythrocyte morphology, basophilic stippling, and complete blood count parameters.

Congenital dyserythropoietic anemia (CDA). A clinical case from 🇮🇱 Israel. Blood was received from a 5-year-old girl for a prophylactic examination. History of b-thalassemia minor. The morphological picture did not correspond at all to the known diagnosis! Complete blood count parameters can be found at the end of the photo carousel below. The smear showed marked aniso- and poikilocytosis! The child was referred for further genetic testing, where CDA was confirmed! What conditions/diseases should we differentiate it from? What erythrocyte shapes and inclusions do we note?

🔬The case was kindly shared by the Head of the Morphology/IFT Department of the Ha-Emek Medical Center Laboratory in Afula, 🇮🇱Israel - Anna Belen.
