Pinworm Eggs with Immobile Larvae in Perianal Swab

Microscopy features of perianal swabs: reasons for finding Enterobius vermicularis eggs with immobile larvae and assessing their viability.

❓ A question from a subscriber. In what cases can pinworm eggs with immobile larvae be found in a perianal swab? Are these immature or could it be during treatment?

✅ This is a non-native preparation; the eggs in it are immobile, but the larva inside the egg does not move. In all the swabs I have seen, and there have been many, the larvae in the eggs were viable, i.e., movement was observed. I am particularly interested in what more experienced colleagues will answer, as I could not find information online.

✅ The question is kindly posed by laboratory assistant Svetlana Sergeevna, Raduzhny City Hospital.
