Microbiology Case: Sputum Culture in Pneumonia

A clinical microbiology case: sputum from a patient with severe pneumonia was examined. Identify the pathogen based on growth on BCYE agar and colony microscopy.

🦠 Microbiology exercise. What was found in the sputum culture? ✅ A 51-year-old man with a history of liver disease and chronic alcohol abuse presented with generalized weakness, hypoxia, sputum production, significant hyperbilirubinemia, macrocytic anemia, and laboratory findings consistent with DIC syndrome.

✅ A chest X-ray revealed a pattern of bronchopneumonia.

✅ Sputum samples were sent for culture. Photo 1: Growth on buffered charcoal yeast extract (BCYE) agar. Photo 2: Microscopy of the colony (gram-negative, thin, short to filamentous rod-shaped organisms).
