❗ Reference information Spheroplasts are bacterial cells that have partially lost their cell wall. They retain the outer membrane and part of the cell wall, thus differing from protoplasts, in which the cell wall is completely removed. They are formed under the action of antibiotics (e.g., penicillin) or lysozyme.

🧪 Urine Examination. Clarithromycin Crystalluria.

⚠ A 26-year-old man presented to the clinic for consultation regarding cloudy urine, which he had since morning. The day before the visit to another clinic, he received a single intravenous dose of clarithromycin (500 mg) for a rounded growth near the glans penis, and we found that the growth was pearly penile papules, which do not require treatment. Urinalysis revealed turbidity (Figure A), the presence of red blood cells and some white blood cells, pH 6.5, specific gravity 1.044, and multiple crystals that looked like needles (Figures B and C).
