Creola bodies in a native sputum smear. Magnification x40. Patient from the pulmonology department. Creola bodies are clusters of columnar alveolar epithelium in bronchial asthma. They are often considered an unfavorable sign. This patient, in principle, had a large number of columnar epithelial cells, some of which clumped together into such “clumps”. Often, cilia are still present at the edges of Creola bodies; in a native smear under a coverslip, it is often visible how they perform their ciliary movements.
