An article from 1995.

Test strips have long been the basis of rapid urine diagnostics. However, visual color assessment is subjective: different laboratory technicians may interpret the same result differently. 🤷‍♂👁

History of Urine Microscopy: First Description of Crystals

Nicolas-Claude Fabri de Peiresc (1580-1637) was a French priest, astronomer, and encyclopedist. ✅In 1554, German physician Johannes Lange accurately described the symptoms of iron deficiency in young girls: “Previously they had rosy cheeks and lips, now they are pale and bloodless, their hearts pound like crazy, they refuse food, especially meat… and often suffer from unrequited love” (Medicinalium Epistolarum Miscellanea). These symptoms were part of the clinical picture of chlorosis, as it was called at the time, along with the patients’ somewhat pale-greenish complexion.
✅Dr. Lange also called the disease morbus virgineus, or maiden’s disease, because he noticed that it receded not only by including iron in the diet, but also after the girls got married. He predictably linked blood loss during menstruation to iron deficiency. When a woman was pregnant, the disease disappeared on its own.

✅In the 1970s, the term “Pawn Ball” megakaryocyte entered common parlance among bone marrow morphologists.
✅But what is a “Pawn Ball”? Pawn – a chess piece. Ball – a sphere. A literal translation is meaningless. This is the name of an ancient symbol of three balls with a complex and interesting history.
✅Previously, the symbol was used in foreign pawnshops.
✅However, the most widely accepted theory about the three-ball symbol is that it originates from the insignia of the Italian bourgeois family – the Medici, who built an outstanding banking and trading empire in Florence during the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Among the representatives of the Medici family are four Roman Popes (Leo X, Pius IV, Clement VII, Leo XI) and two Queens of France (Catherine de’ Medici and Marie de’ Medici).

Our compatriots, military doctors and alumni of the Imperial Medical-Surgical Academy, Cheslav Ivanovich Khentsinsky and Dmitry Leonidovich Romanowsky, made a decisive contribution to the development of blood smear staining. The polychromatic blood smear stain proposed in 1890, using a mixture of azure B, methylene blue, and eosin, has been used worldwide for over 120 years. In 1984, the International Council for Standardization in Haematology (ICSH) Working Group of experts on dyes and staining methods in hematology, composed of the most prominent scientists, concluded: “The Romanowsky staining effect is that the blue cationic dye azure B and the red-orange anionic dye eosin Y, when interacting with biological substrates, produce more colors than just blue and red-orange. Red-purple is the most important color that characterizes the Romanowsky effect,” which finally confirmed the priority of the Russian scientist and physician Dmitry Leonidovich Romanowsky as the creator of the blood cell staining system (Br J Haematol. 1984 Aug; 57 (4): 707–710).
