Magnification x40.
Patient from the pulmonology department.
Creola bodies are clusters of columnar alveolar epithelium in bronchial asthma. They are often considered an unfavorable sign.
This patient, in principle, had a large number of columnar epithelial cells, some of which clumped together into such “clumps”.
Often, cilia are still present at the edges of Creola bodies; in a native smear under a coverslip, it is often visible how they perform their ciliary movements.

Creola Bodies in Native Sputum Microscopy: Diagnostic Value

🔬 Creola Bodies. ❗They represent pseudopapillary complexes of ciliated epithelium. Smaller and less mature cells are located in the center, while hyperplastic cells with a ciliary halo are found at the periphery. Cilia in sputum preparations retain their motility for a long time.
