The disease is characterized by the penetration of the female flea into the skin, the formation of an inflammatory infiltrate, itching, and pain in the affected areas. Fleas are usually found between the toes or under the toenails, and people become infected when walking barefoot in tropical and subtropical regions. Adult specimens can be extracted from the lesions.</p>
