The smear shows small, isolated cells with signs of severe dyskaryosis. The cell nuclei are dense, hyperchromatic, with pronounced folding of the contour (“raisin-like”), occupying most of the cell volume. The cytoplasm is scanty and poorly discernible. These cells may be inconspicuous against the background of normal elements, therefore, a thorough examination of the background and the spaces between large squamous cells is required for their detection.

HPV Type 31: Oncogenic Potential and CIN2+ Dysplasia Risk

🔬 Human Papillomavirus Type 31: How dangerous is it for the cervix?
A new 10-year study provides the answer.

📌 What was studied?
Data from 106,450 women undergoing cervical cancer screening in Turkey (2015–2025) were analyzed. From these, 147 patients with confirmed HPV type 31 infection were identified — one of the high-risk oncogenic strains, in addition to the well-known types 16 and 18.

LSIL and Koilocytic Reaction in Cervical Cytology

🔬 Cervical Cytology.
Reference information:
✅ LSIL (low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion): This is mild dysplasia (CIN 1 by the old classification).
It is characterized by changes in cells that are usually caused by active HPV infection. In most cases, LSIL regresses spontaneously, especially in young women with normal immunity.
✅ Koilocytic reaction: This is a specific cellular change observed in HPV infection.
Koilocytes are cells with enlarged nuclei, irregular contours, and a clear zone around the nucleus (perinuclear halo).
The presence of koilocytes confirms active viral infection.

LSIL Features in Cervical Cytology Smear: A Case Study

🔬 Cervical cytology. Woman, 29 years old.
Last menstruation was 7 days ago.
Staining method: Romanowsky.
✅ Cytological conclusion: Against a background of bacterial vaginosis, changes in multilayered squamous epithelial cells were found, including koilocytic atypia. Cells with high-grade intraepithelial neoplasia (HSIL), suspicious for squamous cell carcinoma, were detected. Glandular epithelium with mild atypia is also present.
Further examination and specialist consultation are recommended to clarify the diagnosis and choose the optimal management strategy.

Cytology of Moderately Differentiated Cervical Cancer

🔬Cytology.
